WD News: Mumbai city which is struggling to meet the day-to-day requirements of water can heave a sigh of relief. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is setting up four sewage treatment plants (STP) between Mahalaxmi and Nepean Sea Road in south Mumbai to recycle biological waste and sewage water.

An STP is a facility in which contaminants from waste-water is removed through scientific treatment for the purpose of recycling it and making it fit for drinking and non-potable usage.

Treated Water from STPs, its Use
These STPs will prevent the disposal of biological human waste in the Arabian Sea and on the reclaimed portion of land. The STP will treat human waste and will recycle the water, so that it can be used for non-potable purpose. Mumbai has a shortfall of water by 400 Million Litres per Day (MLD), and by providing non-potable water for uses like irrigation, gardening and civic works, the bridge of scarcity of water could be tackled.

Locations and Features of the Project
The four STPs will be set up on the reclaimed portions where the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is being built. The largest of the four plants will be built at Markandeshwar Nulla near Atria Mall and it will have the capacity to treat, 300 Kilo Litres (KLD) of sewage. Another STP of 100 KLD is being built at Darya Nagar near Mahalaxmi Temple, followed by a 50 KLD plant near Jindal Bungalow at Nepean Sea Road and a 35 KLD plant near the Darya Sagar slums.

Cost and Timeline
The cost of building the treatment plants is estimated at Rs 4 crore and the fund is being raised through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drives. At present, the work of the Nepean Sea Road STP is almost nearing completion, while the remaining four STPs will be completed by the end of the year.

Administration Speaks
“These STPs are being built by adhering to the clauses of NOC that has been given to the BMC by the Union Ministry of Environment for building the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). The clauses clearly state that no solid and liquid waste should be disposed in the reclaimed portion of sea or in Arabian Sea. Earlier, the human waste from the slum would get deposited in the sea. Therefore, to mitigate this issue we are setting up these STPs,” said Mantayya Swami, chief engineer of MCRP.
