Ooty Municipality to Upgrade the Sewage Recycling Plant at Kandal

The plant, set up in 1996, is currently treating five million litres of wastewater per day (MLD).

WD News: The Ooty municipality (Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu) is planning to upgrade the sewage recycling plant at Kandal for 3.4 crores.

The civic body has prepared a proposal for the work, in the next financial year.

The plant, set up in 1996, is currently treating five million litres of wastewater per day (MLD). Municipal Commissioner of Ooty Mr. Gandhiraj said, “We plan to use advanced aeration-based technology to remove solid organic materials and disease-causing microorganisms. The hill town has been growing and we need a sewage plant with more inlet capacity. We propose to increase the capacity to 7 MLD, which will bring down the time taken to treat water.”

“We have prepared a 3.4 crore proposal, including a pod for the plant for 40 lakhs. It will soon be sent to the government for sanction,” the commissioner said.

At present, the municipality collects one tonne of dried waste sludge from the plant per week, while the treated water is let out in the nearby wetland. The dried sludge is sold to farmers as manure.
