Rs. 200 Crore for Desalination Plant to be Set Up at Manori in Mumbai

BMC said that it has decided to construct a 200 MLD desalination plant, with a provision for future expansion of up to 400 MLD.

WD News: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kept Rs. 200 crores in the current budget provision for desalination projects at Manori in Malad. The project may help to get relief from the 10%-15% water cut imposed every year in the city around May and June.

In 2020, the setting-up of a desalination plant has a capacity of 200 Million Litres per Day (MLD) was approved. The desalination plant will be set up on a 30-acre plot owned by the state government.

BMC said that it has decided to construct a 200 MLD desalination plant, with a provision for future expansion of up to 400 MLD, keeping pace with global trends. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was completed last November and was vetted by a consultant.

The proposal for the tender is being finalised and the bids for the development of the plant will be invited on an international-competitive bidding basis.

BMC supplies around 3,800 MLD of water to the city, as against a total demand of 4,200 MLD.
