Solar Power for Sinnar’s Public Water Schemes

WD NEWS: An ambitious plan to power all public water supply schemes using solar energy is taking shape in the Sinnar taluka of Nashik district. Funds for the initiative will be sourced from the Jal Jeevan Mission and the district planning committee.

Under public water supply schemes (PVSS), there are 29 existing village-level schemes that are constructed by the zilla parishad. There are also five regional water supply schemes by the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran. Of them, three are being redeveloped and two are being constructed.

MLA Manik Kokate said Sinnar was a parched area and incurred heavy expenses on public water supply schemes to draw water from various sources. “A large number of the PWSS are facing high energy bill issues. We have, therefore, decided to shift them to solar power. We have asked the engineers to calculate the load of all these schemes, the area required to set up the solar plants, areas available with the government, cost of investment etc,” Kokate said.

The solar power generated will be evacuated into the grid and when required, the power will be drawn from the grid. By paying appropriate charges, the PWSS will get power at very low rates, Kokate said.
