Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Rural Drinking Water Policy, Nagpur Medical Cyclotron Project

The Maharashtra Cabinet approved a series of major initiatives covering healthcare, drinking water, technology, digital connectivity and governance. The Cabinet gave its nod to the establishment of a High Energy Medical Cyclotron Project in Nagpur. The project, the first of its kind in Central India, is expected to strengthen the diagnosis of various diseases and improve the precision of medical treatment.

The Cabinet also approved the Maharashtra Rural Drinking Water Policy 2026 to address drinking water scarcity in rural areas. The policy aims to ensure the supply of clean, safe and quality drinking water through sustainable measures, better planning and convergence of various schemes.

In a move to promote innovation and emerging technologies, the Cabinet also approved the Maharashtra Unmanned Systems Policy 2026. The policy seeks to encourage the development and use of drones and robotic systems in agriculture and other sectors, while supporting research, development and skill training.

The Cabinet further cleared a revised framework for implementing the BharatNet programme in the state. A state-led Special Purpose Vehicle, Mahanet Digital Infrastructure Limited, or MDIL, will be established to strengthen digital infrastructure and expand broadband connectivity across Maharashtra.

The state government also approved amendments to the Maharashtra Employment Guarantee Act, 1977, to align it with the provisions of the Viksit Bharat-GRAMJI Act, 2025, for the effective implementation of the Viksit Bharat-GRAMJI Scheme.

In another decision, the Cabinet approved amendments to municipal laws granting a final extension of six months to elected representatives occupying reserved seats in local self-government bodies for submitting their caste validity certificates.
