UP Targets 100% Wastewater Reuse by 2035 Under Honourable CM Yogi Adityanath’s Vision

In a major push towards long-term water security, the Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target of achieving 100% safe reuse of treated wastewater by 2035, with an interim milestone of 50% reuse by 2030, under the leadership of honourable Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The initiative marks a strategic shift in the state’s water management approach, positioning treated wastewater as a resource rather than a liability. The proposed policy framework will enable reuse of treated water across municipal services, agriculture, industrial applications, and other non-potable domestic uses, significantly reducing dependence on freshwater and groundwater sources.

According to the Uttar Pradesh State Swachh Ganga Mission, a detailed and phased roadmap has been prepared to operationalise the plan. Project Director Joginder Singh stated that the initiative builds on the state’s ongoing efforts in river rejuvenation and sewage treatment infrastructure development.

Phased Implementation Strategy

  • 2025–2030: Achieve 50% wastewater reuse in areas where sewage treatment plants (STPs) and collection systems are already in place.
  • 2030–2035: Expand treatment and reuse capacity in these regions to reach 100% reuse.
  • Up to 2045: Develop treatment and collection infrastructure in currently unserved areas, enabling phased reuse—first 30%, then 50%, and ultimately 100%.

The government is also preparing separate implementation plans for urban areas, rural regions, and non-potable water use, ensuring contextual solutions that support economic growth while safeguarding drinking water supplies.

Officials noted that by integrating wastewater reuse into mainstream planning, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a national benchmark for sustainable water management, aligning environmental protection with development priorities.
