MoU Signed to Set Up Sewage Treatment Plant in Sivakasi

It would prevent untreated sewage from polluting tanks in the city

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Virudhunagar district administration and Sripathi Paper and Boards Private Limited for setting up a sewage treatment plant to treat untreated wastewater that has been polluting four major waterbodies in Sivakasi, on Wednesday.

District Collector V. P. Jeyaseelan, and managing director of the private company, S. Venkat, signed the MoU in the presence of Sivakasi MLA, G. Ashokan.

The MLA said that currently untreated wastewater from Periyakulam and Chengulam tanks were flowing through interconnected channels and thereby polluting the Urinjikulam tank. It has severely affected both surface and groundwater quality in the region.

“We have already taken up cleaning of the four lakes — Sengulam, Kadambakulam, Urinjakulam and Parpankulam, under the guidance of Finance Minister, Thangam Thennarasu, with the funding sponsorship of Raja KSP Ganesan Trust and is being implemented by Sivakasi Green Forum,” the MLA said.

As part of keeping the tanks unpolluted, 6 million litres per day of untreated wastewater generated by Sivakasi Corporation would be treated by a sewage treatment plant to be set up at Sripathi Paper and Boards Private Limited premises.
