India’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant in Okhla to be Completed in June

There are at least 35 sewage treatment plants in Delhi with a total capacity of around 632 million gallons per day.

WD News: India’s largest sewage treatment plant in Okhla, being built by the central government and Delhi Jal Board, is slated for completion in June.

For two other sewage treatment plants (STP), work is on at a brisk pace. Once built, the STPs will increase Delhi’s sewage treatment capacity so that Yamuna pollution can be reduced.

As per officials, around 83% of the construction at the facility is over. The Okhla plant will treat 564 million litres per day (MLD) of wastewater under the Yamuna Action Plan-III with a targeted effluent standard of BOD 10 mg/l or better.

Along with the DJB, the central authority involved is the National Mission for Clean Ganga. Built at Rs 665 crore, the funds were sanctioned in 2017, with the central share being 85% and the state’s 15%.

More than 40% of the work is complete at the Sonia Vihar STP, which will treat 7 MGD of sewage when in use. The work for a new STP at Delhi Gate is stuck since January this year due to land issues, the plan is to construct a 10 MGD STP to trap the remaining flow in the Delhi Gate Drain within 12 months.
