Egypt Secures $66 Million Funding for Expansion of Wastewater Treatment Plant

WD NEWS: Egypt has successfully secured €61.5 million ($66.64 million) to advance the third phase of the Al Gabal Al Asfar wastewater treatment plant, according to a local Egyptian newspaper report.

The funding, obtained from the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU), is a significant step towards enhancing wastewater management infrastructure in the country.

The agreements, formalised by Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation (MoIC), Rania Al-Mashat, highlight the collaborative efforts between Egypt and international partners to address critical infrastructure needs.

The completion of the third phase will boost the plant’s capacity to process an additional one million cubic meters per day of wastewater.

Leveraging tertiary treatment technology, the upgraded facility aims to produce water suitable for irrigation purposes while generating biogas to fulfill up to 80 percent of its electricity requirements.
