Delhi Jal Board and Partner NGOs’ “Yamuna Jan-Jagran Abhiyan” Program Garner Great Public Support in The National Capital

The Delhi Jal Board, in collaboration with partner NGOs under the Yamuna Action Plan- III (YAP-III), is running two crucial public awareness programs that are making significant strides. These initiatives are focused on the cleaning, conservation, and rejuvenation of the Yamuna River in Delhi, relying heavily on active public participation.

The much-talked program, “Yamuna Jan Jagran Abhiyan,” is a public awareness campaign targeting diverse demographics across the city. The campaign has achieved unprecedented success, engaging 2,94,982 participants to date. This initiative aims to educate the public about the importance of the Yamuna River and encourage collective efforts to restore its health and beauty.

In June alone, approximately 10,900 individuals enthusiastically joined the “Yamuna Jan Jagran Abhiyan,” showcasing a strong commitment towards the river’s restoration. Altogether, lacs of people have participated in both awareness campaigns, reflecting the growing community support for YAP-III.

These programs aim to heighten awareness among Delhi’s citizens and students regarding the cleanliness and conservation of the Yamuna River. Various activities are conducted across the city to achieve this objective:

Art and Performances: Messages about keeping the Yamuna clean are conveyed through street plays, poetry recitations, and songs, engaging the public creatively.

Community Participation: Cleanliness drives and community meetings are organized to motivate residents to clean the Yamuna banks and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings.

Door-to-Door Awareness Campaigns: Delhi Jal Board workers and partner NGO representatives visit households to educate people about the causes of Yamuna pollution and preventive measures.

Education and Empowerment: Seminars, workshops, and training programs teach methods of Yamuna conservation and waste management. Women are encouraged to participate in these activities, fostering community involvement.

Students’ Enthusiasm: Painting and essay competitions in schools promote creative expression and motivate students to take part in cleaning the Yamuna.

Cleaning and rejuvenating the Yamuna is crucial for Delhi due to its significant environmental, health, and cultural impacts. The river is a vital water source, supporting millions with drinking water, agriculture, and industry. Pollution in the Yamuna leads to severe health issues and disrupts ecosystems. Reviving the river can enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable urban development. Moreover, the Yamuna holds deep cultural and spiritual importance, making its restoration a matter of heritage preservation.

The Delhi Jal Board’s continuous efforts aim to cleanse and purify the Yamuna River through these public awareness programs. With the robust public support garnered from these initiatives, there is hope not only for a cleaner Yamuna but also for an improved environment around the river.
