Railway Minister Orders Immediate Measures to Ensure Safe Drinking Water at Stations

Following the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report on drinking water quality, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a day-long review of drinking water quality across the railway network on August 16.

He also directed officials to take immediate corrective measures to ensure safe and clean drinking water for passengers.

As part of the measures, a new Tank-to-Tap water filtration and monitoring system will be installed at nearly 20 thousand locations, including water coolers and a comprehensive water filtration and monitoring system will be installed at approximately 20 thousand points across the railway network along with the replacement of water tanks.

The Minister stressed the need for strict compliance with regular water quality testing at both source and outlet points. He also called for centralised monitoring, clear accountability, and regular cleaning and maintenance of water storage tanks.

The Ministry said safe drinking water is a top priority and will be monitored directly at the Board level. It added that progress and water quality reports will be published periodically to ensure transparency. The Ministry said the initiative is part of a larger drive to address all CAG observations and improve the overall travel experience.
