Precision Treatment of Water Now Possible in Raichur

The new system is being implemented by those who have been specially trained for the purpose to ensure scientific treatment of water that’s supplied to homes across the city limits.

To address repeated water contamination cases in the city, the Raichur City Corporation has launched a co-ordinated and comprehensive maintenance system of water treatment plants.

The new system is being implemented by those who have been specially trained for the purpose to ensure scientific treatment of water that’s supplied to homes across the city limits. These trained personnel will monitor the accurate supply of chemicals to the treatment plant, its management, accurate dosing, maintenance of pumps and motors and also ensure systematic functioning of electromechanical equipment. Besides, this will also enable in detecting any technical lapses that would suddenly occur while supplying water. The newly launched system will ensure the shelf life of machines and other equipment. Special emphasis has been laid on the warning system. With regulated dosing, it is possible to have improved treatment, regular maintenance of treated water, machines and such.

It is also said that the whole system emphasises on single-point accountability with regard to management of documents, supervision of functioning and also in fixing accountability of efficacy. Improved facility The water treatment plant units, earlier, were not equipped with the pre-chlorination facility, and this had limited the effective control of biological growth. The earlier system also could not ensure accurate and consistent chlorine dosing, which made it difficult to maintain adequate disinfectant levels throughout the distribution network. The new system, however, provides greater precision in both pre-treatment and post-treatment processes. How old system worked?

Earlier, the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants were handled through multiple independent systems. Manpower was outsourced separately, while the procurement and storage of treatment chemicals, water purification, and maintenance activities were managed independently. As a result, responsibilities were divided among several agencies and departments. There was also a lack of co-ordination between departments, and maintenance was not carried out adequately. Chemical dosing for water treatment was not properly regulated, and operations largely relied on conventional treatment practices. Daily water testing New water-testing procedures have now been introduced in Raichur city.

Testing kits have been provided to personnel at the ward level, while the Health Department collects and tests three water samples every day. Reports are also obtained weekly from the laboratory at the University of Agricultural Sciences. “New water-testing procedures have been introduced across Raichur city. Testing kits have been provided to ward-level staff, and the Health Department is collecting and examining three samples every day. We also obtain weekly reports from the University of Agricultural Sciences laboratory,” says Raichur City Municipal Corporation Commissioner Zubin Mohapatra.

Measures have also been taken to clean overhead tanks and ground-level water reservoirs using UV rays once every six months. The method has been described as a modern and highly effective approach to water purification.
