The Delhi Government has announced a major initiative to strengthen water conservation in the national capital, with rainwater harvesting systems to be revived and made functional in 75 government schools before the onset of the monsoon. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the move is expected to generate an annual rainwater harvesting capacity of nearly 50 crore litres.
She emphasised that the initiative aims to improve groundwater recharge, promote sustainable water use, and create awareness among students and local communities. She also informed that the government has prepared a corrective action plan, including desilting of pits, replacement of filter media, proper channelisation of rainwater pipes, and improved maintenance access. The Chief Minister added that the government will adopt the ‘Ehsaas’ model, approved by the Delhi Jal Board, known for its low cost and minimal maintenance requirements.
