Dwarka’s New Water Treatment Plant to Begin Operations by December 2025
Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials announced that the new water treatment plant in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka will start operations by December 2025. The plant has a total treatment capacity of 50 MGD, of which 25 MGD will be commissioned in the first phase.
Water Minister Parvesh Verma said that raw water from the plant will also be supplied to Bawana via the Munak canal. “We are focusing on reducing water losses and leakages to improve raw water availability,” he added.
DJB currently operates nine water treatment plants and multiple tubewells, collectively supplying around 1,000 MGD water against the city’s estimated demand of 1,250 MGD — leaving a shortfall of about 250 MGD. Nearly half of the water supplied remains unaccounted for due to unmetered connections, theft, and leakages.
To address the growing demand, the Delhi government is planning three new treatment plants at Iradat Nagar (80 MGD), Najafgarh (75 MGD), and Chhatarpur (80 MGD), which are expected to add 235 MGD of treated water supply once operational.
The city’s existing nine WTPs are located at Chandrawal, Wazirabad, Haiderpur, Nangloi, Okhla, Dwarka, Bawana, Bhagirathi, and Sonia Vihar.
