Water Conservation Activities Draw Success Across 413 Urban Bodies

Madhya Pradesh has seen extensive water conservation activities through collective public participation in the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, which began on March 30. These efforts have been carried out across 413 urban bodies in the state, with active involvement from public representatives and local citizens.

The campaign has focused on the protection and rejuvenation of water sources, the development of water conservation awareness among the public, and the construction of permanent water structures through collective efforts. Key actions included the restoration of rivers, ponds, wells, stepwells, and traditional water sources. In urban areas located along the Narmada River, particular attention was paid to the cleaning and repair of ghats.

As part of the initiative, over 3,300 water sources in urban bodies were rejuvenated, while 2,200 drains were cleaned and their reflow capacity was improved. Additionally, 4,000 rainwater harvesting structures were created across the state. The state also saw the completion of 32 Amrit Jal (elixir water) structures and 38 green area developments in major cities. To improve water quality, urban body employees tested water in urban areas based on physical, chemical, and biological standards.

In response to the summer season, 2,700 public drinking water points and water centers were established in urban areas. Public participation has remained the heart of this campaign, with more than 70,000 citizens joining the effort. The campaign also featured 341 Kalash Yatras (sacred water pot processions), with significant participation from women. Furthermore, 1,000 “water heroes” and “water friends” were registered on the My Bharat Portal.

To further promote water conservation and environmental protection, several activities were organised, including rangoli, painting, and essay competitions for children and youth. A large-scale plantation drive was also launched in urban areas, with a detailed plan to control carbon emissions through tree plantation.

Notable restoration efforts included the cleaning of a 100-year-old stepwell in Ward-12 of Municipal Council Katangi, Jabalpur, and the restoration of the 300-year-old Mata Ahilya stepwell in Kanadia, Indore, through public participation. Other projects included the cleaning and beautification of the Haathi Bawdi in Bagli, Dewas district, and the restoration of a stepwell in Municipal Council Bijaawar. In Ratlam, the stepwell in front of Mahalakshmi Temple was cleaned with the help of local residents, and in Ghuwara, Chhatarpur, the dilapidated stepwell was restored and beautified.

As part of the initiative, citizens were administered an oath to continue maintaining cleanliness around drinking water sources, plant trees near these areas, and cooperate in maintaining gardens and protecting the environment. Self-help groups have also been actively involved in the upkeep of gardens, ensuring sustained efforts toward environmental protection.

The ongoing efforts in the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan underline the importance of community involvement in water conservation and environmental preservation, making it a vital step toward ensuring sustainable water resources in Madhya Pradesh.

The success of the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan reflects the power of collective action and public awareness in tackling water conservation challenges. The campaign has not only rejuvenated numerous water sources but has also fostered a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among the people of Madhya Pradesh.
