Alappuzha (India CSR): UST, a leading digital transformation solutions company, continues its mission of providing clean drinking water in Kerala. The company has installed and handed over two new water treatment plants in the Alappuzha region. The latest beneficiaries are the villages of Kandankary and Vezhapra in Kuttanad.
Addressing a Long-Standing Crisis
For decades, the villages of Kandankary and Vezhapra struggled with the nonavailability of consistent and affordable potable water. This situation led to critical health issues among the villagers. UST recognized the severity of this crisis and decided to take action as part of its flagship CSR Program, ‘Adopt a Village’. Last year, a team from UST visited these water-scarce villages to assess the problem. They committed to finding a viable solution. Earlier this year, UST successfully installed water treatment plants in the villages of Mithrakkari and Oorukary. Building on this success, the company has now extended its efforts to Kandankary and Vezhapra.
The Celebration in Kandankary and Vezhapra
The new water treatment plants have been met with great enthusiasm by the villagers. Over 750 families reside in Vezhapra, while Kandankary is home to more than 250 families. Villagers gathered in large numbers to witness the official handover of the water treatment plants. Prasanth Subramanian, CSR Ambassador, Kochi, UST, along with CSR Leads Shine Varghese and Ramu Krishna, officially handed over the plants during a ceremony. The event was a significant milestone for the community.
Testimonials from Beneficiaries
One of the beneficiaries, Sobha Mohan, aged 50+, expressed her gratitude. “It has been over three decades since our community has been suffering due to the scarcity of good water for drinking and cooking. Continuous use of polluted water from nearby waterbodies has seriously impacted our health, leading to many diseases. We are extremely happy that UST could set this up for us and solve a critical problem in our lives,” she said.
Technical Aspects of the Water Treatment Plants
The water treatment plants installed at Kandankary and Vezhapra are comprehensive and state-of-the-art. Each plant includes a well, pre-filtration and chlorination tank, iron and unwanted minerals filter, Reverse Osmosis (RO) process, carbon filter, UV filter, supply tank, and plant room. These components work together to ensure the water is thoroughly purified and safe for consumption. The advanced filtration and treatment processes remove contaminants and ensure the water meets the highest standards of purity.
The Impact of UST’s CSR Efforts
“The handing over of two more water treatment plants for the benefit of the villages of Vezhapra and Kandankary in Kuttanad is a continuation of UST’s efforts towards Vezhapra and Kandankary villages too. UST’s efforts are sure to go a long way in ensuring the availability of drinking water in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha,” said Prasanth Subramanian, CSR Ambassador, Kochi, UST.
The positive impact of UST’s CSR initiative is evident. The water treatment plants have provided a sustainable solution to a long-standing problem. Villagers now have access to clean, safe drinking water, which significantly improves their quality of life.
Looking Ahead
UST’s commitment to addressing the water scarcity issue in Kerala is ongoing. The company plans to continue its ‘Adopt a Village’ program, targeting more villages that face similar challenges. The success in Mithrakkari, Oorukary, Kandankary, and Vezhapra serves as a model for future projects. By leveraging its resources and expertise, UST aims to make a lasting impact on the communities it serves. The company’s CSR initiatives reflect its dedication to social responsibility and community welfare.
