Treatment Plant to Clean Villivakkam Lake to be Built

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, will be constructing a modular tertiary treatment reverse osmosis plant of 5 MLD capacity, worth Rs17.6 crore, as part of the eco-restoration of the Villivakkam Lake. The tender process is over, and the treatment plant construction will begin in a month, said a Metrowater official.

The treatment water will work similar to the Nesapakkam tertiary treatment reverse osmosis plant.

Sewage from the Villivakkam sewage pumping station will be taken to the plant where the wastewater goes through three treatments ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and ozonation. Then, the treated water will be sent to Villivakkam Lake.

“When there is no adequate sewerage infrastructure around a lake, it is better to intercept and divert it into a treatment plant and send the treated water back to the lake. Raw sewage is discharged into many waterbodies across the city, and this is a positive move in arresting pollution of the lake,” said Darwin Annadurai, an environmental engineer with Eco Society India.

“This will also help in cleaning up the groundwater around the lake,” said the Metrowater official.
