Trinidad & Tobago: Water security will be enhanced for thousands of residents as the sod was turned for the upgrade of the Guanapo Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the refurbishment of the North Oropouche Water Treatment Plant (WTP).
The Ministry of Public Utilities says the projects are part of ongoing efforts to improve water security and reliability across the country.
The upgrade to the Guanapo WTP will directly benefit approximately 20,500 people in Arima, Pinto Road, Calvary Hill, Mt. Pleasant, Alenore Gardens, Bypass Road, and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, the North Oropouche WTP refurbishment will strengthen service reliability for nearly 186,000 residents in Northeast Trinidad.
Delivering the keynote address yesterday, Minister of Planning and Development, Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, underscored the importance of the collaboration between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Public Utilities (MPU), and the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) in bringing these major projects to fruition.
She also took the opportunity to urge citizens to practice good water conservation habits, particularly with the onset of the dry season.
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Utilities, Marvin Gonzales, highlighted several upcoming projects aimed at further improving the national water supply. These include the construction of the Santa Cruz Water Treatment Plant, and the refurbishment of the Freeport, Navet and Chatham Water Treatment Plants.
The Ministry noted these infrastructure improvements are expected to positively impact over 220,000 residents.
