WD News: People of North Guwahati will get access to potable tap water from next month as the state government will partially commission the much-awaited Japan International Cooperation Agency-funded water project of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) in May.

Shri Ashok Singhal, Urban Affairs Minister, held a review meeting of the progress of the JICA-funded water supply projects, and said that over 7,000 households will be covered with the commissioning of the North Guwahati water project, which has a capacity of distributing 37 million litres of water per day.

The project, construction of which began in 2011, will cover 17 localities in North Guwahati.

“The progress of work of both the JICA-funded water projects — North Guwahati project and the South-Central Guwahati project — is satisfactory. We have already partially commissioned the South-Central Guwahati project in December last year and we are covering more areas in a phased manner. We expect complete commissioning of the projects soon,” the minister said.

CM Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the partial commissioning of the South-Central Guwahati project, which has a capacity of 191 million litres per day, in the presence of Kunihiko Kawazu, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in India, and Jun Tsumori, Counsellor of Embassy of Japan in India, along with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India Chief SAITO Mitsunori.
