In Bid to Fight Water Woes, Gurugram to Link 2 Water Treatment Plants

Gurugram: In view of the rising water shortage problem, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to connect the Basai and the Chandu Budhera water treatment plants. The decision was taken to fight the water woes prevailing in the city at the onset of the summer season. The GMDA will increase the efficiency of the two plants so it can meet the increasing demands of water in the city.

Officials said that both plants have the capacity to work for 24 hours a day. However, their usage was limited to 20 hours so far. With this mind, the officials decided to improve the management of the plants. Now, the authorities aim to increase the supply by five to ten per cent. “Though it will be an interim measure, it will be a help to us in dealing with the shortfall partially. By implementing these measures, the authority intends to supply 615 million liters per day (MLD) of water across Gurugram,” said a GMDA official, reported Times of India. Apart from that, a dedicated substation has been set up for the Chandu Budhera plant. Meanwhile, work has begun for the 66 kV substation at Basai, which will address the issue of power supply disruption,” he added.

The peak demand for the season is 675 MLD. Residents of Gurugram receive water from the two plants located in Chandu Budhera and Basai. While the Chandu Budhera plant delivers 300 MLD, the Basai plant provides 270 MLD of water. Last year, the Basai treatment plant was enhanced by upgrading two filtration units by 45 MLD. It increased its potential to filter up to 315 MLD of water. However, the plant could not reach its full capacity due to insufficient raw water supply.

The work for connecting the two plants has started already. According to the officials, at least 50 per cent of the work at the Basai plant has been done. Authorities expect to complete the work by early May this year. “We have already laid the pipeline towards the Basai side and will soon start laying the pipeline towards Chandu Budhera. We hope to finish the work by the first week of May,” the official added.
