The municipal administration and water supply department has allocated the amount of Rs 20 crores to upkeep the waterways in the city.

WD News: The Greater Chennai Corporation will plug sewage outfalls in all the 30 city canals, and also create boundary walls for the ones that don’t have any, at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

The corporation will use the funds to remove encroachments at Mambalam, Pulianthope and Virugambakkam canals, while sewage will be plugged in other canals as well.

The non-stop sewage from storm water drains are not just polluting the waterways but have turned the canals into mosquito-breeding hotspots.

Environmental scientist Mr. Darwin Annadurai said all the canals are basically sewage carrying channels, and we have to see how they prevent sewage entry. “They should avoid concretisation of drains as it would prevent water from going into the ground. Secondly, dumping of plastic and other waste must be prevented too,” he said.
