DJB to Open Asia’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant at Okhla on September 30

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will inaugurate Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant (STP) at Okhla on September 30, marking the completion of a project first launched in 2019. Built under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the facility has a capacity of 124 million gallons per day (MGD) and will benefit nearly 40 lakh residents across south, central, and old Delhi.

Officials said the ₹1,161 crore project, spread over 40 acres, replaces four smaller STPs at the site and will generate power from treated waste while producing A-class reusable sludge. Once operational, it will be the single largest contributor to Delhi’s sewage treatment capacity and a major step in reducing untreated wastewater discharge into the Yamuna.

The inauguration is expected to be a grand affair, with around 6,000 invitees, including local residents, MLAs, and dignitaries from Japan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to attend as chief guest, alongside Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Water Minister Parvesh Verma.

Despite delays caused by the pandemic and construction bans, work was completed earlier this year, followed by trial runs. Funding was shared between the Centre (85%) under Yamuna Action Plan-III and the Delhi government.

The STP will serve areas including Civil Lines, Paharganj, Green Park, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, New Friends Colony, CR Park, Okhla, and Sarita Vihar.
