20 Lakh Homes to Benefit from Upgraded Water Treatment Plant
More than 20 lakh households in South Chennai are set to receive an improved water supply from 20 September, when the Chief Minister will inaugurate the newly upgraded Chembarambakkam Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 530 MLD. The project, which will serve several parts of Chennai and its adjoining areas, marks a significant step towards strengthening the city’s water infrastructure.
The Chembarambakkam plant, originally commissioned in 2007 by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, had until now been supplying only 265 MLD of treated water to areas including Anna Nagar, Adyar, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, and Teynampet, as well as parts of Tambaram and Avadi corporations.
“This was because only one pipeline was laid at the time. The second line faced repeated delays due to permission issues with the National Highways Authority. The contract was cancelled several times, which discouraged contractors from taking up the work,” explained Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) Managing Director T. G. Vinay.
With the completion of the works, the full 530 MLD capacity can now be utilised. “We will be able to supply 530 MLD of water to the city and its outskirts. However, we will draw water based on demand,” Vinay added.
Previously, water supply from the Chembarambakkam plant was restricted to four to five hours per day as its full capacity was not in use. “From Saturday, as we tap into the full capacity, we will increase supply to six to eight hours in areas under Chennai, Tambaram, and Avadi Corporations,” he confirmed.
Residents have welcomed the development. “We have been receiving water for about four hours daily without interruption. If the duration is increased, we will no longer have to rely on tanker lorries, especially during summer,” said S. Jayachandran, a member of the Ambattur Residents’ Welfare Association.
