62 Sewage Treatment Plants to combat pollution in River Yamuna and Gurugram Canal

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Environment, Forests and Wildlife Minster Kanwar Pal Gujjar said on Monday that to reduce the pollution load in river Yamuna and consequently in Gurugram Canal, 62 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) of 1129 MLD have been installed and working upstream Okhla Barrage and having effect on Gurugram canal. Out of these 62 STPs, 22 STPs of about 241 MLD capacity have been installed during the last 5 years.
In addition, 16 number STPs of 409 MLD capacity are being upgraded to meet stringent standards and 8 new STPs of 253 MLD capacity are being constructed.

Further, 5 new STPs of 410 MLD capacity has also been approved.
The Minister was replying to a question raised by member of House during the ongoing budget session of Haryana Vidhan Sabha here.
He said that polluted water is being released by the UP, Delhi and Haryana into River Yamuna, which runs into Gurugram Canal downstream of Okhla Barrage. The Government has constituted a high-ranking committee regarding the issue of pollution in Gurgaon Canal with Transport Minister as its Chairman and 15 MLAs, Additional Chief Secretary (Environment), Additional Chief Secretary (Irrigation), Additional Chief Secretary (Agriculture) and Member Secretary (Haryana State Pollution Control Board) as its members. The committee has reviewed the issue to control pollution in Gurugram canal and reuse of polluted water after treatment. Secretary Jal Shakti Govt. of India, being the head of Central Monitoring Committee also reviews the status of implementation of Yamuna Action Plans of various basin states.

The Minister said that for addressing the issue of contaminated water being discharged in Gurugram Canal from different sectors of District Faridabad, 2 STPs are under construction, out of which 1 STP at village Mirzapur having capacity 100 MLD and 1 STP at village Pratapgrah having capacity 80 MLD is under construction. In addition, 1 STP at village Badshahpur of capacity 45 MLD is under upgradation in district Faridabad and likely date of completion of these STPs is June 30, 2024.

He said that the work for the treatment/diversion of 88 MLD sewage generated in 273 villages from rural areas in the catchment of river Yamuna have been planned out of which work has been completed in 180 villages and is under progress in 93 villages. Sewage lines are laid in the river Yamuna catchment and balance sewage lines of 85 Kms in 3 towns (Faridabad, Karnal, Panipat) are also being laid so that untreated sewage can be carried to existing STPs for treatment.
He said that 99 MLD effluent has been proposed to tap at 155 locations out of which 84 MLD effluents has been diverted at 138 locations whereas the work for diversion for remaining 15 MLD at 17 locations is under progress. In addition, the work for interception of 177.14 MLD sewage in district Gurugram has been planned out of which 70.1 MLD from 19 locations have already been tapped. The state has also planned to reuse the treated sewage for micro irrigation in 2 phases. 9 STPs of 172 MLD capacity has been planned in phase-I, out of which 8 works for using 142 MLD is under progress and 25 works of 307 MLD capacity has been planned in phase-II which are yet to start.
He said that 14 Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) of 163 MLD capacity have been installed to treat the industrial effluent up to the desired standards so that the river Yamuna is not polluted. The industrial effluent from stand-alone industries is being treated by these industries themselves. The monitoring of these industries are being done by HSPCB and action is being taken against defaulters. The pollution level in terms of yearly average value Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) has come down from 32 Mili gram/litre in 2018 to 23 Mili gram/litre in 2023.
He said that Haryana State Pollution Control Board is conducting Water sampling of Gurugram Canal on regular basis. The water in Gurgaon Canal is contaminated mainly due to polluted water received in river Yamuna from the states of Delhi, Haryana and UP. He said that Haryana State Pollution Control Board is regularly monitoring the industries in the catchment of river Yamuna and action is being taken against the violating industries. The HSPCB has levied Environment Compensation of approximately Rs. 80 Crore on 122 industries/units during the financial year 2023-24. A total 89 units have been closed and 30 prosecution cases have been filed.
