The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is set to invite tenders within two months for the establishment of a 190 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant in Aluva.
With an outlay of ₹523 crores, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project aims to address Kochi’s growing drinking water needs and is designed to meet projected supply demands up to 2050.
The new facility will be located within KWA’s compound in Aluva, approximately 200 metres from the existing plants, and is expected to be completed within 15 months. The selected company will oversee operations and maintenance for five years. Water will be sourced from the Periyar.
Currently, Kochi’s water requirements are served by four plants in Aluva and one 100-MLD plant in Maradu. Together, these provide a production capacity of around 225 MLD against a demand of 260 MLD, creating a gap of 49 MLD, which is projected to increase to 80 MLD by 2050.
The upcoming plant is expected to bridge this shortfall and ensure supply to Kochi Corporation, 13 adjoining panchayats, and five municipalities.
