Integrated Reservoir Management Centre launched for Improved Flood Control in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has launched the Integrated Reservoir Management Centre (IRMC) for Chennai, enhancing flood preparedness and coordinated reservoir operations.

Inaugurated on 06 January 2026, the IRMC is located at the Indian Coast Guard Campus in Chennai. The system, developed by Canarys Automations, uses an autonomous reservoir decision-making system (ARDMS) to manage Chennai’s three key reservoirs—Poondi, Chembarabakkam, and Red Hills—by integrating flood early-warning capabilities, SCADA-controlled gate operations, IoT sensors, and AI-driven decision intelligence. This technology allows real-time, data-driven decisions on reservoir management, ensuring controlled water release and flood risk mitigation.

“The commissioning of ARDMS represents a shift from manual, reactive dam operations to a proactive, climate-resilient water management framework,” said Shyam Mantha from Canarys Automations. The platform can be scaled to other reservoirs across Tamil Nadu, supporting long-term urban flood resilience and water security in the state.
