The flood situation in Punjab has further intensified with incessant rain lashing several districts and rivers, including the Ghaggar and Beas, flowing in spate. The Ravi, which witnessed very high inflows last week, has inundated large parts of border towns and nearby villages.
According to officials, improvement is expected only once water flow reduces and moves downstream. Many parts of Amritsar and surrounding villages have been severely impacted, with reports of extensive damage to houses, farmlands, and infrastructure.
More than 1,000 villages have been affected due to overflowing rivers and controlled release of water from reservoirs.
The water level of the Beas river once again rose sharply following excess water release from Chakki dam. At Dhilwan, near Sultanpur Lodhi, the flow was recorded at 2.35 lakh cusecs. Similarly, the Ghaggar river has swelled after receiving excess water from tributaries such as the Markanda and Tangri. While levels at Chika (Haryana), Khanauri (Sangrur), and Sardulgarh (Mansa) remain below the danger mark, the administration has issued alerts in vulnerable areas.
In Hoshiarpur, excess rainfall has led to water entering several villages. Relief and rescue operations are continuing across eight flood-affected districts, including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Hoshiarpur, and Kapurthala. Along with the civil administration and police, the Army, Air Force, NDRF, and BSF are actively engaged in evacuations and providing aid.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and cooperate with ongoing relief measures.
